Simple tools are enough for routine cleaning
Remove sand, leaves and loose debris first so they cannot scratch the surface. Use water, a neutral stone-safe cleaner and a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse with clean water.
- Soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge
- Neutral stone-safe cleaner
- Clean water for the final rinse
Remove wax patiently
Lift hardened wax gently with a plastic rather than metal tool. Test any suitable stain product on a discreet area first and never heat granite with an open flame.
- Avoid metal scrapers
- Do not mix cleaning chemicals
- Test a small area first
Products and methods to avoid
Acidic, strongly alkaline or abrasive products can alter gloss, damage painted lettering or leave an uneven finish. High-pressure water may weaken joints.
- Abrasive powders and coarse brushes
- Unidentified acidic cleaners
- Strong jets directly at joints and lettering
A seasonal inspection
In spring and autumn check joints, slab stability, drainage and nearby plants. Movement or an opening joint is easier to correct before moisture and frost enlarge the problem.
- Joints and slab alignment
- Drainage after rain
- Roots, moss and organic debris
